  • What is MSRP?

MSRP stands for Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, sometimes also known as the sticker price. Because this price is only a suggestion, a dealer can choose to sell a vehicle above—or, more often, below—MSRP.

  • What is Market Average?

Based on actual recent transactions other buyers have made, the Market Average shows you the average price others paid for vehicles similar to the one you want, while taking into account that most of these vehicles have different option combinations from the ones you specified.

  • Statewide, Regional, and National Data

If there are insufficient transactions in your area, we calculate your Market Average by gathering statewide, regional, or national data. Because this data can come from a large geographical area it may not be as representative of your local market.

2021 Kia Rio Model Description

What's NewRefreshed front-end styling; All-new 8.0-inch infotainment screen; Standard wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto

As affordable transportation, the Kia Rio excels, thanks to its smooth and efficient powertrain and modern interior. It outflanks many competitors with its polished ride and upscale styling. Some competitors offer more standard driver-assistance features. Yet, the Kia Rio's well-rounded driving dynamics and standard technology make it one of the segment's top choices.

Shoppers can select the Rio sedan that comes in LX or S trim levels or a hatchback sold in S trim only. The Rio rides on a front-wheel-drive platform like virtually all of its competitors. The LX trim is priced from around $16,000, making it one of the least expensive new cars available. With that price, you get Kia's best-in-class warranty, including ten years or 100,000 miles of powertrain coverage. Standard features include a backup camera, automatic on/off headlamps, variable intermittent wipers, power heated outside mirrors, cloth upholstery, power controls, air conditioning, a six-speaker AM/FM audio system, Bluetooth, an 8.0-inch touchscreen color display, and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The S trim brings the price to around $17,000, adding such helpful amenities as cruise control with steering-wheel-mounted buttons and remote keyless entry with trunk opener. Standard USB charging ports and adjustable rear headrests add extra comfort and convenience on the go. Kia offers a technology package on the S trim for around $1,800. It adds driver safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, automatic high beams, and an advanced tire pressure monitoring system. It also comes with LED headlights, satellite radio, a driver display, automatic climate control, push-button start, and alloy wheels.

The Rio has an excellent balance of engine power and efficiency. It employs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder motor that produces 120 horsepower and 112 lb-ft of torque. To help improve fuel economy, Kia utilizes a continuously variable transmission. Together, this powertrain offers smooth power delivery with minimal noise. On the road, the Rio is agile and comfortable. Its ride is smooth. The EPA estimates it will return 33 mpg in the city and an impressive 41 mpg on the highway. This combination of a refined ride and efficient dynamics makes the Rio an excellent commuter car option. Like most cars in its class, the Kia Rio uses front-wheel-drive.

Sitting in the Kia Rio's cabin, it may come as a surprise that this is the South Korean brand's least-expensive car. While some budget-oriented rivals employ cheap-feeling materials and outdated designs, the Rio feels modern and sporty. The physical controls are nicely placed, and the cabin plastics are solid and nicely textured. Shoppers can choose from black or gray cloth seats. The front-seat space is excellent. The Rio has good headroom and better outward visibility than you might expect. Kia includes adequate in-cabin storage, including cupholders, door bins, and a console-mounted tray for smartphones and other small items. Passengers in the back don't have nearly as much legroom, but it is still enough space for kids. The sedan's cargo area is decent, at 13.7 cubic feet, while the hatchback provides an impressive 17.4 cubes. Those wanting extra space should opt for the S trim with its 60/40 split-folding rear seat. In 2021, Kia made an 8.0-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration standard, rare features for the price. The system is easy to use, and physical volume controls are included for quick access. An optional tech package provides amenities like passive entry, push-button start, and advanced driver safety aids.

It is a comfortable car, especially for those in a budget.

While milage is good, it's not necessarily great. There are some issues and tends to be about 75 miles short of estimate.

I like the small size of the car and the good cargo capacity for the size. I also appreciate that you don't need to buy the highest trim level to have access to Apple CarPlay and other features that many manufacturers only provide on upper trim levels. As it's a small car, the handling is very tight and it's a fun little car to drive. It gets great gas mileage and is cheap to fill up.
cons
Acceleration is sluggish at times, especially on the highway. Rear passenger space is limited, so difficult to fit 4 adults in this car if they are at all on the taller side.

Sits too low - had an SUV before and liked the view. No storage compartment between front seats. Not much other storage, pockets behind driver seat and on doors. Had a 2001 Sportage and loved it, miss it very much.

The Starting Market Average is a proprietary mathematical calculation based on actual recent transactions. It provides a statistically accurate understanding of what other buyers are paying for the least expensive configuration of this vehicle. Adjustments to the calculation beyond make, model, and trim are normalized based on detailed, anonymized transaction information. This accounts for the fact that most or all recently-sold vehicles included different option combinations. The data underlying the Starting Market Average calculation are filtered for extreme outliers and subjected to a weighted averaging process that considers factors such as the recency of transactions and the timing of data lags. In certain instances, the calculated result is adjusted to take account of abrupt changes in the market that may not yet be fully reflected by recent transaction prices. In all cases where the Starting Market Average is shown there is sufficient sample size and transaction detail to be statistically reliable.
